教你美国人用字的些微差异

对母语人士来说，大多数字意非常接近的字，其实都有细微的差异，有时甚至只是使用时机的不同，譬如 since 和 ever since 非常很接近，两者都是指事情由过去开始，延续到现在，并可能延续到未来。差别在於 since 通常是在某个时间点之后，而 ever since 比较会用在过去的某一个事件之后。

譬如一般比较会说 Since 2011… 而不会说 Ever since 2011…。或是会说 I haven't eaten since last night，这时同样也不会用 ever since。

又譬如 quite 是一个很好用的字，我们看看下面两句话的差别

This coffee is not as good as Starbucks.
This coffee is not quite as good as Starbucks.

这两句话中所提的咖啡其实都跟 Starbucks 差异不大，但第二句话中加了quite 就更拉近了彼此的差异， 可以说是 almost as good as Starbucks。课程中 Luke 老师教了大量这样的用字差异。

如何用英文说出一个千亿的数字

常常华人在听或者是要说英文的数字时，总是反应不过来，尤其是一个比较大的数字的时候，主要的原因就是中文的数字单位和英文不一样，英文没有「万」的观念。

其实英文的数字逻辑非常简单，就是以三位数为单位，Luke 老师会教你很简单计算的方式，也是每一个美国人使用的方式，让你可以像美国人一样很快的说出如千亿之类很大的数字。

美国人的说话礼貌

很多人认为美国人说话非常的「直接」，但其实在「直接」的同时，美国人生活当中的英文用词其实包含了非常多有礼貌、以及委婉的说法。譬如有礼貌的拒绝一个邀请时，可以说 I love to, but...

要用比较委婉的说法是 kind of 或是 a bit 都是非常适合的用字，意思和中文中的「有点」非常类似，譬如 I'm kind of in the middle of something. 我现在手上有事在处理。或是 I'm kind of busy right now. 或是 I'm a bit busy right now. 我现在有点忙。

如果你还不知道美国人是怎么有礼貌的说话，那你就有点逊罗！

过去完成式到底是什么意思？

过去完成式表示在过去的某个时间点之前，某些事情就已经完成了。譬如 I went to Canada on Monday. I had already been there three times. 所以我一共去了加拿大几次呢？

在这句英文中使用了过去式以及过去完成式。I went to Canada on Monday. 我周一去了加拿大，是用过去式。后面的句子 I had already been there three times. 表示在周一之前我就已经去过加拿大三次了，加上周一的这一次，所以我一共去过加拿大四次，这个就是过去完成式真正的意思，在过去某个时间点之前，某些动作就已经完成。

用英文来说，过去完成式就是 We basically are talking about past things that happened before another past thing.

美国口语常用的说法到底是什么意思

很多美国人常挂在嘴边的 What’s up 到底是什么意思? 是 How are you 吗？其实两者是不同的，而 What’s up？的真正意思要看当时说话的状况（by context）

第一种情况：在大多数的情况下 What’s up 是一个不正式的打招呼方式，就像是 Hi 或 Hey 的说法，语意上类似 What have you been up to? 或者是 What are you doing? 最近在忙些什么？一般回覆会说 Not much, you?

第二种情况：也有可能真的有事情发生了，可以说 What’s up？ 这个时候的 What’s up？意思跟 What’s Wrong? 是一样的

另外在电视电影中美国人常说 Would you like to get a drink?
这时候是指在问要喝饮料? 水？酒？或任何东西吗？ 这其实是在询问是否要喝含酒或是含酒精的饮料，而不是水或一般的饮料。
